A whole plate folding camera. The wooden body is made from two woods of a contrasting colour. The camera is fitted with a convertible lens system (see separate entry), part inscribed "Photographe a Verres combines invente Charles Chevalier Ingenieur Optician Brevete Palais Royal 163 Paris". The camera can be folded down for transportation and storage. Accompanied by a focussing screen, dark slide plate holder and iodine box with ground glass cover (see separate entries). Introduced 1840.
The inner box is not a complete box, just enough of a box to make it light tight. The two 'boxes' are moved relative to one another by turning the round knob on the top. When the ground glass screen is removed, the front panel hinges down to allow the sides to fold. The frame contains an inset scale against which the position of the rear box can be measured. See also the other parts of this equipment set.
