John Jabez Edwin Mayall erlernte 1840 die Daguerreotypie bei Dr. Paul B. Goddard in Philadelphia. Zwischen 1845 und 1846 arbeitete er dort in Partnerschaft mit dem bedeutenden Daguerreotypisten Samuel Van Loan. Dies sollte jedoch nur kurz dauern, denn schon im kommenden Jahr übersiedelte er nach London und eröffnete dort ein Atelier. In kurzer Zeit avancierte er zu einem der wichtigsten Photographen Englands. 1851 machte er mit Mammut-Daguerreotypien vom Londoner Kristallpalast von sich reden und errang auf der Weltausstellung eine Goldmedaille für diese Aufnahmen. Managed by John Jabez Edwin Mayall 1852 - 1866. 3. 226 Regent Street, Westminster September 1856 - 1866. Managed by Dr Bushnell in 1860s. 4. 15 Argyll Place, Regent Street, Westminster 1858 - 1866. New suite of rooms opened November 1851. LITERATURE: Daguerreotype Institution mentioned in The Literary Gazette, April 10 1847 pp 280 - 281. “Professor Highschool of Philadelphia is about to open in the Strand a daguerreotype establishment…” It also mentions various portraits of famous people and views of Niagara Falls so some plates will pre-date this date. Employed Mansion as colourist October 1847 (previously employed by Kilburn). Crayon daguerreotypes advertised IN Times October 1850. Crayon daguerreotypes patent March 1853 (Athenaeum advert August 13 1853). 30 views of Great Exhibition advert IN Times September 15 1851. Great Exhibition 1851 award Class 10 No 291 (pp 239 - 240).
