This French daguerreotypie is an early example of photography in the service of topography In the 19th century, the castle of Falaise is one of the main attractions in Normandy Among other things the English 'The Stereoscopic Magazine' publishes in 1858 a stereophoto of the ruins The appreciation of this type of castle ruin is closely linked to the picturesque love for the romance, the (re) discovery of the Middle Ages and the emergence of national historiography () The opportunity is therefore very strong that these daguerreotypie with a view to reproduction in engraving form was produced () The striking silhouette of the high-rise, massive castle ruins, on the the rocks, dominates the whole picture and contrast with the modest, more recent buildings at the foot of it (Taken from: Het archief van de verbeelding)
