In Heirloom Harvest these photographs are accompanied by an essay by Amy Goldman in which she shares with us her passion and advocacy for heriloom gardening.

Amy Goldman is one of the foremost heirloom plant conservationists in the United States. She is the author of Melons for the Passionate Grower, The Compleat Squash, and The Heirloom Tomato. She lives in Rhinebeck, New York.

Jerry Spagnoli is America's premier daguerreotypist. His work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, and others.

In the afterword M Mark - the founder of the Village Voice Literary Supplement - and Jerry exchange thoughts about photography, history, memory and this recent work. Jerry Spagnoli tells us that fifteen years ago Amy asked him to produces daguerreotypes of her harvest: "I came to realize that every plant I photographed had a cultural background-you could even say each had a distinctive socila life. This conception of the lives of food-bearig plants is a radical departure from the contemporary realities of industrial farming, where fruits and vegetables are produced in what amounts to factories. As I worked, I was discovering these plants as members of diverse communities from around the world. I felt committed to respecting the individuality of each subject. I photographed and tried to produce a collection of portraits that avoided the uniform, formulaic representation of a typical typology".
