Daguerreotypiet er et av flere eksempler på teknikker brukt i trykkekunsten i Østerrike. Det er lagt i den praktfulle utstillingsboksen Der Polygraphishe Apparat 1853 laget for Staatsdruckerei der Alois Auer ledet bedriften. Boksen viser den høye graden av utvikling innen trykkekunsten i Wien og inneholder flere medaljer vunnet under den store industriutstillingen i London 1851. Utsikten er fanget opp av dansken Christian A. T. Piil fra taket til Staatsdruckerei i Singerstrasse 26, Wien. Han ble ansatt av A. Auer i begynnelsen i1851 for å utvikle teknikker å trykke bilder fra daguerreotypiplater til bøker. Dette prosjektet lyktes ikke og Piil returnerte til København i 1855.

The Palais Coburg, also known as the Palais Saxe-Coburg rests on the Braunbastei, a part of the Vienna city defences, and dates back to 1555.The daguerreotype is one of many items placed in an exhibition box Der Polygraphishe Apparat 1853 made for Staatsdruckerei where Alois Auer was manager. The box shows the extraordinary level of printing achieved in Vienna and contains medals won at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851. The image was taken by the Danish Christian A. T. Piil from the roof of the Staatsdruckerei in Singerstrasse 26, Vienna. He was employed by A. Auer in 1851 to develop a technique which would make it possible to etch daguerreotype plates and print from them using a book printing press. This project failed and Piil returned to Copenhagen in 1855.

Educated as goldsmith. Inventor of chemitype (kemitypi, Chemitypie) 1842, moved from Aarhus to Leipzig in Germany 1846. Printed banknotes in Chemnitz 1849. Tried etching daguerreotypes to be able to print these in books 1851. Employed at Hof- und Staatsdruckerei in Wien (Vienna) by Alois Auer to develop that Method. Returned to København (Copenhagen) in 1855 where he published a monthly, photographic handbooks. Worked as silver smith, and photographer.
