James Lacy Reynolds was appointed Ensign in the Thirty-Sixth Regiment Native Infantry (Rifle Company), stationed at Samulcottah in 1849, see http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/INDIA/2000-12/0977043265 . James Lacy Reynolds of the East India Company.
He was the only son of James Reynolds of Kenwick Lodge, near Worcester. He was baptised on February 3rd 1827 at St. Mary’s Church, Stratford Bow, East London. Educated at St. Neufchatel, Switzerland and by a private tutor, Mr. C. Howard, of 31 Upper Gower St , Bedford Square London.
Reynolds was recommended to the East India Company by Baron Lionel de Rothschild. Reynolds posed for this daguerreotype when he was around 21, probably in late 1848 (possibly a keepsake for his parents) before embarking upon life of colonial travel.
Shortly after this daguerreotype was taken, Reynolds sailed to Madras, India on board the Mary Ann on January 18th, 1849 where he served in the 36th infantry (also known as the Nundy Regiment). He was made Lieutenant on April 23rd, 1854.
When he returned to London, he married his sweetheart, Eliza Rodrigues at St Pancras Church on April 17th, 1856. After this, he returned to India for a short time before resigning from the Madras Native Infantry on April 15th, 1858.
Reynolds settled down at 15 Walpole St, Chelsea and went on to have a long and fruitful life. He died in Chelsea on the 30th of July 1910 at 83 years old. See http://www.victorianwars.com/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=10821
