He wears a double breasted jacket with five buttons on show and a single breasted waistcoat , white shirt, black bow tie and worsted wool trousers. Both elbows rest the chair arms. It is a reeded armed wooden chair. He has a congenital deformity to his left forefinger and an enlarged middle finger. His shirt collar sits up. A watch chain is visible. Plain background. T Wharton case maker registered his ‘Design for a Miniature picture frame back’ with the certificate of registration on 23rd August 1841. This object is dated June 3rd , 1851 but on the backing the metal is embossed with 4 August 1841.

Embossed centrally on the brass backing of the casing is ' T.WHARTON, No 791, 4 AUGUST 1841'.
Possibly copper coated brass backing characteristic of T Wharton's patented style. It wraps around the edges of the glass holding the mount , cover glass and daguerreotype together. A modern copper wire hanging ring has been attached centrally to the top edge.
